The Retreat

Some places you visit. Shangarh, you arrive at — a vast, sacred meadow ringed by old deodar forest. We built Heavenly Retreat at its edge, so you could wake up to it.

Shangarh Meadows is one of those rare places that photographs cannot quite hold — an open sweep of green kept sacred by the village for generations, watched over by the Shangchul Mahadev temple. It is never too crowded here. The valley keeps its own pace, and so do we: unhurried mornings, long meadow walks, and evenings that end around a fire under an extraordinary spread of stars.

Shangarh Meadows — a short walk from your suite

Why Shangarh

The meadow keeps its quiet

Shangarh has none of the noise of the better-known hill towns. No traffic, no queues, no crowds jostling for the same viewpoint — just the meadow, the forest, and the slow rhythm of a village that has protected this place for centuries.

From the retreat, the meadow is at your doorstep. Walk it barefoot at dawn while the dew is still on the grass. Let the children run — there is nowhere in the mountains where they can run quite so freely, or so safely.

  • Sacred, protected grassland — no construction, no commerce on the meadow itself
  • Gentle, pram-and-grandparent-friendly walks in every direction
  • Star-filled night skies above the meadow

Getting Here

The last 8 km are earned

The final stretch to Shangarh is an unpaved road running along the edge of the Great Himalayan National Park. It is also the reason the meadow is never crowded — and honestly, it's part of the magic.

01

Exit at Aut

Leave the highway just after the Aut tunnel and trade the traffic for the Sainj river. The road narrows, the air cools, and the trip properly begins.

02

Through Sainj

The last market town before the climb. Stock up on anything you've forgotten — from here, the road follows the river up through small villages.

03

Along the National Park

The last 8 km are unpaved, climbing along the edge of the Great Himalayan National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take it slow: the valley opens up beside you, and this humble road is exactly what keeps Shangarh peaceful.

04

Arrive

The trees open, the meadow appears, and the courtyard is waiting. Whatever the road took out of you, the first view gives back — with interest.

Most cars manage the track comfortably in fair weather; an SUV or a car with reasonable ground clearance is recommended during the monsoon. Prefer not to drive it? Call us ahead and we'll connect you to a local cab driver.
